..The Daily Notes, Canonsburg PA, Thursday 24 January 1924, front page - JAS. FIFE BAIRD ACCIDENTLY SHOOTS HIMSELF - Was Cleaning Revolver When It Was Discharged, Bullet Entering Forehead - Lived Two Hours - FUNERAL SERVICES FRIDAY -- The home of MR. and MRS. CHARLES BAIRD, on the McMurray Road, Peters Township, presents a scene of sorrow today, on account of the accidental death of their oldest son, JAMES FIFE BAIRD, which occurred Wednesday at 2 p.m. at his home, when a revolver he was cleaning was discharged. The bullet entered his right forhead. The accident occurred about 12 o'clock, just before luncheon, when Mr. Baird was cleaning a 38 caliber revolver in his room on the second floor. He had his window open and he evidently was getting ready to try his aim on crows in a tree nearby, as had been his custom. He had conversed with members of the family, including his mother, and was apparently in the best of health and spirits. Dr. John A. Johnston and Dr. W. R. Foster of Canonsburg were called and rendered all medical aid possible, but Mr. Baird died two hours after he was shot, without regaining consciousness. The deceased was born in Peters Township 27 years ago and had spent his life there. He graduated from the Peters Township High School and also from Duff's Business College, Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Center Presbyterian Church. Several years ago he was employed in the drafting department of the Fort Pitt Bridge works and for two years was an employee of the Pittsburgh post office, and had a window at the Union Arcade branch. He was unmarried. Besides his parents, Mr. Baird leaves two sisters, JENNIE and HARRIET, teachers in the First ward, Canonsburg schools, and one brother RAYMOND, all at home. Funeral services will be held at Center Church Friday at 2 p.m. and will be conducted by Rev. John Waite, the pastor of the deceased. Interment will be in Center Cemetery.
