Frank Huott, Pioneer of The Dalles, Dies at Ripe Old Age.
Frank Huott, a pioneer of The Dalles, died last night at his home in this city, 169 North Twenty-second street. He would have been 87 years of age on November 17, and was born in Quebec.
Mr. Huott came to Oregon in 1856, and settled near Canyon City. Far and wide among the pioneers he was known as "Alkali Frank," for the reason that he was one of the first settlers on Alkali Flat. For more than 30 years he kept an inn near The Dalles.
In 1905 Mr. Huott removed to this city, where he had since resided. He is survived by his widow, four daughters and one son, Frank E. Huott, of this city. The daughters are: Mrs. W. J. Wright, of Ketchikan, Alaska; Mrs. C. D. Fardher, of Dufur, Or.; Mrs. A. M. Hawkins and Mrs. Frank Loveland, of this city. All of the children were present at his bedside.

Frank Huott, one of the picturesque and interesting figures of early Oregon days, who died late Monday night at his home 169 Twenty-second street North, will be buried today. His funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock at Holman's chapel, and Judge McGinn, a friend of the family, will give the funeral address.
Mr. Huott was born in 1830 at Chauriche, 20 miles below Quebec, Canada. He crossed the plains in 1854 an came to Portland in '56. He lived here when there were only four houses in the "city," His next move was to Canyon City. In 1860 Mr. Huott was attacked by the Indians, robbed and wounded, ut escaped to The Dalles. He established himself as the first settler of Alkali Flat and thereafter was known to the pioneers as "Alkali Frank."
His five children, all living now and who were at his bedside, include: Mrs. Frank Loveland, of Portland; Mrs. W. J. Wright, of Ketchikan, Alaska; Mrs. T. C. Fargher, of Dufur, Or.; Mrs. A. M. Hawkins and Frank Huott Jr. of Portland.
