Lance Allen McLean was born on April 1, 1975, in Biloxi, MS to Ricky and Joyce McLean. His end of watch came on June 29, 2013, when he was taken from us all too soon.
In 2002, Lance married the love of his life, Katy Cryer in their hometown of Hico, TX. They had two kids, Quinton Allen and Abigail Marie. Lance was a loving Dad who cherished his children. Most of his days off you could find him cruising back roads with Abby.
Lance had a passion for helping people that was apparent in the nine years he spent in the law enforcement field. He was proudly employed by the Hood County Sheriff's Office where he served as a Sergeant, was a member of the SWAT team, and proudly served as an honor guard. Before coming to Hood County his career in law enforcement began in Hamilton County.
Lance, or "Lou" as so many people that loved him called him, was an avid Rangers fan. He loved to spend his free time with his family, down on the river fishing, or at the golf course golfing. He had such an amazing sense of humor and always had a smile on his face and a helping hand to lend. He will be deeply missed by so many people that loved him.
Lance is survived by his loving wife, Katy; his son, Quinton; and his daughter, Abigail; of Hico. He is also survived by his mother, Joyce McLean; brother, Randy McLean and wife Tina of Hico; his grandfather, Don McLean of Dublin, TX; Father and mother-in-law Rusty and Alice Cryer; Brothers-in-law Russell Cryer and Zach Cryer all of Hico and a very special Uncle Wesly McLean and wife Missy of Eunice, NM. Not to mention his numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Last but not least his brothers and sisters of the Hood County Sheriff's Office and his extensive extended law enforcement family.

Sgt. Lance McLean, 38, succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained when responding to protect a teenage sexual assault victim whom Granbury Officer also shot and wounded (details below). Born with a soul that has courage to wear the badge, Sgt. McLean had been Saving, Serving, and Protecting the People for nearly 15 years. This amazingly selfless and Honorable Warrior lived for the People and for his family, both of blood and of Blue ... and oh how he just loved being a Police Officer. Brother Lance began his calling about 15 years ago and served on several different departments before finally settling in with the Hood County five years ago. By this time, Officers from all surrounding agencies, as well as citizens, knew of Lance's reputation and man was he respected by all. His courage under fire coupled with his compassion in the field made for one all-around great cop. Such pride he took in his armor daily and his loyalty to his oath set the bar high for all those who worked along side Sgt. McLean. This was a take-charge, no-nonsense leader who led by example. If evil was to be gotten, he made sure the job got done and if there were a citizen in need, Brother Lance could be found leading here too. In fact, it was this urgency to keep a victim safe that ultimately led to his untimely death.
Highly decorated in just five years with the HCSO and achieving the rank of Sergeant, Brother Lance was paving a path of great leadership while never forgetting the true meaning of what the 'Brotherhood' stood for. Sgt. McLean was known for 'playing well with others' in that no matter his role, everyone he was with was equal and treated as so. Everyone, and their assignment, was important, and he made certain they knew this at all times. As a member of the multi-jurisdictional SWAT Unit, St. McLean trained hard and loved every minute of it. And he was so encouraging to his teammates as well. His positive attitude and never-ending motivational words were a great asset to all he worked with. He was fearless in the face of danger and valiant in his efforts to keep his fellow Officers ... and the People ... safe. But this was a fair man as well. Never did he judge, never did he hold bias on those who broke the law. He had a job to do and he was going to do it but he did it with humanity at all times.
His love of Life and of the People was unwavering. No matter how much evil he witnessed, Sgt. McLean knew there was still more good than bad. And all he wanted to do was to make a difference in his small corner of the world. Brother Lance even rushed to aid in the horrible and deadly Texas tornado outbreaks last month, simply because he knew he needed to be there to assist fellow responders. And when not wearing his Deputy hat, he would don his Firefighter hat. With as much as he already gave to the People, this Warrior still found time to volunteer with his local Hico Fire Rescue Department. Lance was probably the most recognizable person in the entire region because he always seemed to be there when needed most. And he was loved for this ... and for his amazing sense of humor!
As much as he loved those he worked with, his love of his family was even greater. With his beautiful wife Katy by his side, this dynamic duo were raising two special needs children and they did so with all their heart and soul. There was nothing he would not do for his family, nor for his friends. He was a loyal family man and friend ... honest, sincere, and always there. This Brave and Benevolent Son, Husband, Father, and Brother of Blue truly Lived As Only A Hero Could. We must all take a piece of his legacy with us into the battles and carry him with us as we continue to create our own legacies. And may we all band together to ensure that his children know how much their daddy meant and was loved by all.

Lance and Katy, who is a teacher, had recently been in search of acquiring a handicap-accessible van to make numerous trips to doctors, as well as simply trying to give their children a chance to experience as much of life as they could. Quinton was diagnosed with two very rare conditions – Alobar Holprosencephaly and hydrocephalus and was given a grim prognosis at a long life. But he is a fighter just like his daddy, already surpassing the doctors' prognosis by years. As he is getting bigger, it is becoming more difficult to travel safely. My Brothers and Sisters, now more than ever, our Katy needs this van.
May we vow to help protect and keep safe our Brother's wife and help her raise and care for these children in the way that Lance would want. May we never forget how our Brother Gave His Life As Only A Warrior Dare ...
At 1050h ours Friday, Sgt. McLean, along with fellow Deputies, responded to a disturbance call at a home of a teenage sexual assault victim. Upon arrival, the suspect of that assault was the subject being called on. Sgt. McLean was first to arrive, When the suspect saw Sgt. McLean, he opened fire, shooting our Brother in the head. The shooter drove off but not before fellow Deputies shot at the fleeing van. A description of the van with shot out windows went out and Officers located almost immediately as it drove into the City Hall parking area. The suspect got out and opened fire again on Police. Granbury Police Officer Chad Davis was shot before fellow Officers shot and killed the killer. Sgt. McLean and Ofc. Davis were both brought to the hospital in critical condition. Ofc. Davis, a 12 year veteran, had a gunshot wounds to his shoulder (the bullet exited his back) and to his knee. On Saturday, he was moved out of intensive care and doing better. With a heavy heart, this proved to be our Brother Lance's final battle. Sgt. Lance McLean succumbed to gunshot wounds to the head and was pronounced at 1145 this morning.
Lance leaves behind his beloved bride Katy, son Quinton, 10, and daughter Abby, 7. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the entire McLean and Davis families, the Men and Women of the Hood County SO, the Granbury PD, and to all whom have had the pleasure and the privilege of knowing and working along side this True Blue Hero. His courage under fire coupled with his compassion in the field made for one all-around great cop. Such pride he took in his armor daily and his loyalty to his oath set the bar high for all those who worked along side Sgt. McLean. This was a take-charge, no-nonsense leader who led by example. If evil was to be gotten, he made sure the job got done and if there were a citizen in need, Brother Lance could be found leading here too. In fact, it was this urgency to keep a victim safe that ultimately led to his untimely death.
Highly decorated in just five years with the HCSO and achieving the rank of Sergeant, Brother Lance was paving a path of great leadership while never forgetting the true meaning of what the 'Brotherhood' stood for. Sgt. McLean was known for 'playing well with others' in that no matter his role, everyone he was with was equal and treated as so. Everyone, and their assignment, was important, and he made certain they knew this at all times. As a member of the multi-jurisdictional SWAT Unit, St. McLean trained hard and loved every minute of it. And he was so encouraging to his teammates as well. His positive attitude and never-ending motivational words were a great asset to all he worked with. He was fearless in the face of danger and valiant in his efforts to keep his fellow Officers ... and the People ... safe. But this was a fair man as well. Never did he judge, never did he hold bias on those who broke the law. He had a job to do and he was going to do it but he did it with humanity at all times.
His love of Life and of the People was unwavering. No matter how much evil he witnessed, Sgt. McLean knew there was still more good than bad. And all he wanted to do was to make a difference in his small corner of the world. Brother Lance even rushed to aid in the horrible and deadly Texas tornado outbreaks last month, simply because he knew he needed to be there to assist fellow responders. And when not wearing his Deputy hat, he would don his Firefighter hat. With as much as he already gave to the People, this Warrior still found time to volunteer with his local Hico Fire Rescue Department. Lance was probably the most recognizable person in the entire region because he always seemed to be there when needed most. And he was loved for this ... and for his amazing sense of humor!
As much as he loved those he worked with, his love of his family was even greater. With his beautiful wife Katy by his side, this dynamic duo were raising two special needs children and they did so with all their heart and soul. There was nothing he would not do for his family, nor for his friends. He was a loyal family man and friend ... honest, sincere, and always there. This Brave and Benevolent Son, Husband, Father, and Brother of Blue truly Lived As Only A Hero Could. We must all take a piece of his legacy with us into the battles and carry him with us as we continue to create our own legacies. And may we all band together to ensure that his children know how much their daddy meant and was loved by all.
A special note: Our Brother's children, son Quinton, 10, is confined to a wheelchair and daughter Abby, 7, has (moderate to severe) autism. Lance and Katy, who is a teacher, had recently been in search of acquiring a handicap-accessible van to make numerous trips to doctors, as well as simply trying to give their children a chance to experience as much of life as they could. Quinton was diagnosed with two very rare conditions – Alobar Holprosencephaly and hydrocephalus and was given a grim prognosis at a long life. But he is a fighter just like his daddy, already surpassing the doctors' prognosis by years. As he is getting bigger, it is becoming more difficult to travel safely. My Brothers and Sisters, now more than ever, our Katy needs this van.
May we vow to help protect and keep safe our Brother's wife and help her raise and care for these children in the way that Lance would want. May we never forget how our Brother Gave His Life As Only A Warrior Dare ...
At 1050h ours Friday, Sgt. McLean, along with fellow Deputies, responded to a disturbance call at a home of a teenage sexual assault victim. Upon arrival, the suspect of that assault was the subject being called on. Sgt. McLean was first to arrive, When the suspect saw Sgt. McLean, he opened fire, shooting our Brother in the head. The shooter drove off but not before fellow Deputies shot at the fleeing van. A description of the van with shot out windows went out and Officers located almost immediately as it drove into the City Hall parking area. The suspect got out and opened fire again on Police. Granbury Police Officer Chad Davis was shot before fellow Officers shot and killed the killer. Sgt. McLean and Ofc. Davis were both brought to the hospital in critical condition. Ofc. Davis, a 12 year veteran, had a gunshot wounds to his shoulder (the bullet exited his back) and to his knee. On Saturday, he was moved out of intensive care and doing better. With a heavy heart, this proved to be our Brother Lance's final battle. Sgt. Lance McLean succumbed to gunshot wounds to the head and was pronounced at 1145 this morning.
Lance leaves behind his beloved bride Katy, son Quinton, 10, and daughter Abby, 7. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the entire McLean and Davis families, the Men and Women of the Hood County SO, the Granbury PD, and to all whom have had the pleasure and the privilege of knowing and working along side this True Blue Hero. Special healing prayers are with our Brother Chad (who is married with a young daughter). Our thoughts are with all who were involved in this incident. May you lean upon one another and give each other the strength to work through all the emotions.
