The Rev. Fr. Frank Melovasich, 72, associate pastor of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Lakeside, Duluth, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, in his home. He was born Aug. 14, 1925, in Ely, the son of Frank and Mary Pluth Melovasich Jr. He was a graduate of Ely High School and attended Nazareth Hall from 1939 until 1945 and St. Paul Seminary. He was ordained June 3, 1950, at the former Sacred Heart Cathedral in Duluth. He served at the St. John's and St. James' Orphanage from July of 1950 until October of 1957 and St. John's Catholic Church in Biwabik from October of 1957 until June of 1963. He was the first pastor at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Brainerd from June of 1963 until July of 1966 and was at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Duluth from July of 1966 until July of 1977. From September of 1977 until December of 1977, he was on sabbatical in Rome at North American College. From December of 1977 until June of 1990, when he retired from administration, he was at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Rapids. He became assistant pastor at St Michael's in Duluth and served until his death. He became chaplain of the Serra Club of Duluth in 1990. He was very active in the Diocese of Duluth, having served three times on the Priest Senate, on the Continuing Education Committee, two terms on the Personnel Board, director of Teams of Our Lady Group, and had directed the Priest's Choir. He had served the Duluth Diocese for 48 years. He is survived by an aunt and uncle, Ev and Stan Loushin of Two Harbors, and many cousins. Memorials are preferred to St. Michael's School, Duluth, St. Joseph's School, Grand Rapids, or the College of St. Scholastica. Funeral: Wednesday, April 8, at 11 a..m. at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary. Burial: Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.
