Screenwriter. He is best known for his screenplays of such classic films as "Sabrina" (1954), "The King and I" (1956), "Sweet Smell of Success" (1957), "North by Northwest" (1959), "West Side Story" (1961), "The Sound of Music" (1965), "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1966), "Hello, Dolly!" (1969) and "Family Plot" (1976). He was one of the last survivors of Hollywood's Golden Age. Served as president of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) from 1983-1985. He received an Honorary Oscar in 2001.
