 I had the pleasure of meeting Shelby Foote, in the US military cemetery at Colleville St Laurent near Omaha beach in Normandy France. He was looking at a grave, as we were passing he said "I have found you at last". When he moved away from the grave, I asked if he had found a relative, he said "no, I am checking for someone in England". On my next visit to the cemetery some years later I noted the graves of the Niland brothers near where I had met Shelby, the family that was the bases of Speilbergs film saving private Ryan, the scene at the grave in the film reminded me of the way Shelby spoke when I first saw him, I wonder if he did research for the film?. Im so sad at his passing I had wish I'd written to him years ago, I go to the cemetery in memory of the young G.I's that was kind to us children back in England while whey waited for D-Day.
