Merl E. Bottrell, 69, of Blue Mound died at 11:47 am Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at his home.
He was born December 13, 1931, in Decatur, the son of George and Esther Himstedt Bottrell. He married Kathryn E. Sauers on August 12, 1956, in Mechanicsburg. He farmed all his life in the Mt. Auburn area. He was a member of the Berea Christian Church, where he served as a Superintendent, Sunday School teacher and Deacon for many years. He attended Central Christian Church and was a life member of Kedron Masonic Lodge #340 AF&AM, where he twice served as Master and was treasurer for many years. He was awarded honorary memberships in the Masonic Lodges in Harristown, Morrisonville and Edinburg and was a Certified Lodge Instructor since 1990. He was a member of Springfield Consistory, member of A.T.A. #331 of Osbernville, Trustee of Mosquito Township Cemetery for 16 years, member of Christian County Farm Bureau and served on the Niantic-Harristown School Board for many years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife; son, George M. (wife Jackie) Bottrell of Normal; daughter, Arlene Doyle of Lake St. Louis, MO; grandson, Casey Doyle; brother, George Dean (wife Ruth) Bottrell of Science Hill, KY; one niece and nephew and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Wayne.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Friday, April 6, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes in Decatur. Burial will be in Berea Cemetery near Mt. Auburn.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday, April 5, at the funeral home, with Masonic rites at 8:00 pm.
