The 23rd Iowa fought at Vicksburg under Grant and Sherman as well as several other engagements. Mr. Barton was a member of Col. Hartwell Compson GAR Post 22 in St. Johns.
He was the son of Joseph and Annie Foster Barton and was survived by his wife Nancy C. Barton.
