Union Civil War veteran who enlisted in Company A, 23rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment on 21 August 1862. Mustered out on 26 July 1865 at Harrisburg, Texas. The 23rd Iowa fought at Vicksburg under Grant and Sherman as well as several other engagements. Mr. Barton was a member of Col. Hartwell Compson GAR Post 22 in St. Johns.

He was the son of Joseph and Annie Foster Barton and was survived by his wife Nancy C. Barton.

This grave was unmarked for 101 years until members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in Oregon and California worked with Rose City Cemetery and descendants of the Barton family to obtain a headstone from the VA.
