WINSTON-SALEM--Dorothy Inez Simmons Kirby, age 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Trinity Glen Nursing Home in Winston-Salem, NC. She was born on April 9, 1920 to Myrtle Lawson Simmons and Charles Matthew (Matt) Simmons in Lawsonville, NC.
She was preceded in death by her brother Maurice Simmons (Margaret), her former husband Oscar M. Kirby, her son Robert David Kirby, her daughter Alyce Jane Watkins Hayworth, and her granddaughter Sarah Browder.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan Kirby Browder (George) and Pamela Kirby Zick (Kenneth); eight grandchildren, David Zick (Kati), Leigh Zick Dongre (Milind), Katherine Browder (Kate Norris), Benjamin Browder (Lauren), Melissa Hayworth, Marsha Hayworth, Martha Hayworth, and Terry Hayworth. Dot also leaves behind numerous dear friends, including long-time friends Rilla Gregg and Scharlot Angel.
Dot resided for most of her adult life in Lenoir, NC, Rockingham, NC, and finally, in Winston-Salem, NC. She was a noble, clever, and courageous woman who exemplified strength for the other women in her life, including her daughters and granddaughters. Those who knew her well will not forget her sharp wit, her fierce determination, and her intelligence.
Her life will be celebrated at 2:00 pm. Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home is assisting St. Paul's with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that donations be made to Trinity Glen Nursing Home, 849 Waterworks Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 520 Summit Street, Winston-Salem, 27101.
