Eliza Clarke was born 21 April 1821 in England. She was the daughter of William Clarke, a framework knitter, who died prior to her marriage 21 May 1844 to William Elsworth at Harvey Lane Chapel in Leicester, Leicestershire, She immigrated with her husband and two children in June 1848. They settled in Mazomanie, Wisconsin. She had twelve children and died 7 June 1868 after the birth of the last child at Mazomanie, Wisconsin.
