Dwight A. Miller, 65, of Palm Beach died Tuesday, June 15, 2010, while vacationing in the Dominican Republic.
Mr. Miller was born Feb. 13, 1945, in Glen Cove, N.Y., the son of Andrew O. Miller and Jeanne W. Miller of Oyster Bay, N.Y.
He attended the East Woods School in Oyster Bay and The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn., graduating in 1963. He graduated from Yale University in 1967, with a bachelor of arts degree.
At Yale, he starred on the hockey team for three years and was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon.
Shortly after graduation, Mr. Miller entered the U.S. Navy and served as an officer for 3½ years on various vessels supporting the Vietnam conflict.
He spent his final year of service in South Vietnam as liaison to the U.S. Marines.
Following his military service, he attended the University of Virginia Law School, where he served on the editorial board of the Virginia Journal of International Law. He graduated in 1973 with a juris doctor degree.
He was associated with the New York law firm Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam and Roberts (now Pillsbury, Winthrop, Shaw, Pittman LLC) from 1973 to 1978, practicing corporate and trusts and estates law.
He then joined the legal department of St. Joe Minerals Corp. in New York City.
After St. Joe was acquired by Fluor Corp. in 1981, Mr. Miller moved to St. Louis as general counsel of St. Joe.
Several years later, he and colleagues from St. Joe founded Big River Minerals Co. of St. Louis, which acquired various zinc, coal and other mineral properties, from Fluor.
Following the liquidation of Big River, he moved to Palm Beach in 2003 and joined Alley, Maass, Rogers & Lindsay in 2004, practicing maritime, finance and corporate law.
He was chairman of the Emergency Children's Home in St. Louis, a trustee of East Woods School, a member of the Development Board of St. Louis Children's Hospital and general counsel of the America's Society.
Mr. Miller was a member of the Bath and Tennis Club, the Everglades Club and the Piping Rock Club of Locust Valley, N.Y. He was a member of The Mayflower Society.
Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Keithley Rose Miller; a son, Christopher Miller, and wife Christina of Los Angeles; a daughter, Victoria Miller of New York; two brothers, Jeffrey C. Miller of Norwalk, Conn. and Bradford P. Miller of Palm Beach; and two sisters, Constance M. Bergh of Ipswich, Mass., and Deborah M. Lalor of Wachapreague, Va.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19 at The Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea, 141 S. County Road.
