Beck was born February 15, 1919 in Murray, Utah. He graduated from Murray High School and became a truck driver for a short time, but later became a dispatcher for Garrett Freight Lines. He was a deacon in the LDS Church while in Salt Lake City. He attempted to sign up for military service in World War II, but was denied due to a deformity of his hands.

He was very attached to his grandfather, Francis Albert, and they made several trips to California to watch the Golden Gate Bridge being built. They were present and walked across it when it opened on May 27, 1937.

Beck married Lola June Channing on April 19, 1940, and their first daughter, Lorina Lee, was born on March 22, 1940. She was named after Beck's late mother, Myrtle Lorina, with whom he was very close. Four more children followed: Laddie Alan on 4/9/43, Francie Lynn on 10/9/49, JuLee Ann on 7/2/51, and Kathy Joan on 1/14/53.

The couple moved to Phoenix in 1965. Francis worked for Maricopa County while Lola worked at Smith Pipe and Steel Co., Cutter Air Service, and Switzer's. He passed away from congestive heart failure on August 28, 1988.

Frannie (as he was also often called, though he didn't like it much) and Lola loved going dancing, and they watched horror movies together on Friday and Saturday nights. They also liked playing cards with their friends and neighbors. Francis enjoyed driving, and took long Sunday drives through the areas around Salt Lake City and Phoenix. Among his favorite foods were Chinese food and banana splits.
