He arrived on the "British Ship Arkwright" at the port of New York on 4 May 1835, age 24, Gardener, with his father James Smith 57, Seedsman, mother "Mrs Smith" 50, and four siblings.
They initially settled at Winterbourne, Woolwich township, Waterloo County, Ontario. In 1836 his father bought land in Brantford township, Brant County: 100 acres at concession II, lot 28, and the next year they moved there.
In March 1841 his father purchased the right to buy a further 100 acres of Crown Land (Concession II, lot 23, Brantford Township) and was awarded a patent for this property from the Lieutenant Governor dated 30th July 1841. At some point William Smith moved to this property to claim the land and to begin clearing it and building a house.
He inherited in 1844 the 100-acre farm his father had bought in 1841. He was already living there at that time. James's will also mentions a 26-acre woodlot, part of the south part of Concession I, lot 27, which he gives, half to William and half to George, but he may not have had legal title to this property, as in Sept 1852 William and George jointly purchased the same property from William L. Ewing (who had received a patent for it on 27 Nov 1851).
In 1856 he received a patent for the north quarter of the south half of Concession II, lot 23 (50 acres). In 1861 he purchased an additional 100 acres.
He bequeathed in 1881 his property to his nephews:
James A.: Concession II, lot 23 north three quarters (150 acres) and Concession I, lot 27 (13 acres)
William C.: Concession II, lot 24 south half (100 acres)

Death of William A. Smith
It is our painful duty to chronicle the death of Mr. Wm. A. Smith, of Paris Road, which sad event took place last Tuesday. The deceased gentleman had been in bad health for some time, and his demise was therefore not unexpected. Mr. Smith came to this country from Scotland in 1835 and since then he has been an enterprising, industrious, successful and intelligent citizen. The products of his fields, orchard, and garden were often exhibited at the Provincial, county and township shows, and in all his relations in the family, the church or this world, his influence was always on the side of morality and religion. His 70th birthday was the day previous to his death.
