Born and baptised Hans Christian Smith in Nakskov, Lolland, Denmark, he went by the name of Christ in America.

He was one of the many family members who were farmers in South Dakota and some of the family is still living on one of the farms.

He married Christian Thomson who was born 4/10/1868 also in Denmark, and passed on 10/20/1953 in Beresford.
