Louis Moffett Alexander, age 88, died Sunday, September 4, 2011, after a long and happy life. Louis was born in Dublin, GA, on March 22, 1923, to Paul Ward and Nannie Louis Moffett Alexander. He left Dublin to attend Emory University and to serve in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific, but he lived most of his life in Dublin. He loved his hometown.
Louis graduated from Dublin High School in 1940 and attended Emory University. His college experience was interrupted by World War II. He left Emory to attend Officers' Training School at Cornell University, graduating in 1944. Louis served in the Navy in the Pacific as a navigator. He returned to Emory, graduating in 1947 with a Masters in Chemistry
After returning to Dublin in 1950 with his wife and their infant son, Louis worked with his father at Alexander Lumber Company until 1968, then joined Hogan-Scarboro Corporation in the 1970's. He retired in 1990 from Alexander's Office Center.
Louis was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for 40 years. He served on the Dublin City Council for two years. He also was a member of the Rotary Club and the Elks Club. He was proud of being both a Paul Harris and a Will Watt Fellow in Rotary. For many years he was part of a group of men who ate breakfast at the "Front Table" of Ma Hawkins restaurant and solved the world's problems.
Louis was a man of many talents. He was a wonderful story-teller, entertaining generations with humor and hyperbole. He was a sharp card player, winning at bridge just last Christmas. He was a philosopher and debater. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend
There will be a visitation at Adams Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 6, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, September 7, at Dublin First United Methodist Church.
