Obituary:

MRS. JANE WEST, 81, PIONEER, IS DEAD

Mrs. Jane West, a lifelong resident of Genesee County, died at her home, 1305 Church Street, this morning.

She was born in Grand Blanc 81 years ago and was married to John West in Linden 57 years ago. She lived on a farm in Clayton Township until 1919 when she moved to Flint. Her husband died in 1920 and her only son, Earl West, died four years ago.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Lewis, deputy county clerk; four granddaughters, Catherine Lewis and Audrey, Marion, and Beatrice West; two grandsons, Merton and John West; a sister, Mrs. Eiiza Smith of Argentine, and two brothers, Albert Smith of Argentine and Archie Smith of Washington.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the residence, and burial will be in Grace Lawn. The Rev. William Schlitts of Lennon will officiate.

(Unknown newspaper, March 1934.)

Note courtesy of Joann Osgerby Geybels: Mabel Lewis, who in this obituary is listed as a daughter of Mrs. Jane West was actually the daughter of Jane's sister Catherine (Smith) Ellison and her husband William Ellison. After Catherine's death on March 2, 1882, Jane took her infant niece Mabel into her home and raised her. She never adopted Mabel but, when the estate of Mabel's father William M. Ellison was probated in Iosco County after his death in 1892, Jane was appointed Mabel's legal guardian as of September 9, 1893.

Likewise, the mention of Catherine Lewis as a granddaughter of Jane West is therefore inaccurate, as her maternal biological grandparents were William M. and Catherine (Smith) Ellison. The other grandchildren who are mentioned—Audrey, Marion, Beatrice, Merton and John Floyd West—were children of her son Samuel Earl West (1891-1930).
