Steven was the son Peter Nichols and Lucretia Carpenter. He married Helen Jane Drake on Sept 26, 1863 in Dekalb county, IL. They were the parents of Byron, Mina, Verna, Ray, and Myra.
April 27, 1888 - The Valley Chronicle, St. Charles, Ill. - About twenty friends and neighbors of Stephen L. Nichols gathered at his home three miles west of Sycamore on Wednesday night to express in a substantial way their sympathy with him in the loss of his barn, horses and cattle which were consumed by fire from the effects of a lightning stroke on Sunday morning last. They brought with them a paper signed by his friends in Mayfield, DeKalb and Sycamore, in which they subscribed for Mr. Nichols' benefit some $1400. $1075 in cash of that sum was thereupon presented him in a short but appropriate speech by his neighbor, Captain Safford. Mr. Nichols was so completely overcome by such unexpected charity and generosity that he was unable to suitably respond. (Sycamore Republican)
Dec 27, 1923 - Carroll Times - Steven Luther Nichols was born near Kirkland, Illinois, May 22, 1837, and died at Glidden, Ia., December 26, 1923, at the age of 86 years, 7 months, and four days. He is the last of a family of 10 children, the son Peter and Lucretia Nichols.
He was married September 26, 1863, to Helen Jane Drake, who preceded him in death on March 17, 1919. To them were born five children, as follows:: Byron J. of Yetter; Mina V, now Mrs. P.I. Pasley, of Madison, Wis.; Verna B., now Mrs. C.A. LaPorte, of Glidden; Ray F., of Carroll, and Myra V., who died in infancy. He also leaves 13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Mr. Nichols was a pioneer farmer of Mayfleld township, starting at the close of the Civil War, and farming until 1894, when they moved to Sycamore. Since the death of his wife he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. LaPorte, of Glidden.
He was enrolled in Company F, 9th Illinois Cavalry, 105 Regiment, on the 28th day of February, 1865, and received his discharge on October 31, 1865, when his company was mustered out.
He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge, the Masons, which he joined in 1862, and the Knights Templar which he joined in 1868. He was converted in 1917 in the Methodist faith at Sycamore and was a member of the church there.
His death was caused by two recent paralytic strokes, which led to static pneumonia.
