Ruby was the tenth child and youngest daughter of James Lewis and Mary Ann (Gaver) Stottlemyer. She gave various birth dates, years and locations over her lifetime, but they were always Nov. 4 or 11. The 1900 census lists 1894 as the birth year and so does the death index. Perhaps she used an 1885 year on her marriage license to appear older. She married Levi Lutton on October 4, 1913 in Madison County, Indiana.

Levi became a minister, but always had another job, too. She was a ministers wife, mother of four children who survived childhood and a member of the West Cross Street Alliance Church. At the end of her life she lived with her daughter Helen (Lutton) Robbins in Yorktown, Delaware county, Indiana. Her other children were Donna May (Lutton) Eicher, James P. Lutton, and Leroy Jackson Lutton. At the time of her death her only living sibling was Fannie (Stottlemyer) Russell of Marion.
