He married Rebecca Shortess January 17, 1850, and fathered Thomas Pierce (b. 11/29/50), Mary A. (b. 07/12/56), James R. (b. 07/26/59), and Elmer L. (b. 08/03/61). In 1860, he was a shoemaker living in Bloomfield, Perry County. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Andersonburg, Perry County, June 16, 1863, understating his age by five years, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg June 21 as a private with Co. A, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa), and honorably discharged with his company January 6, 1864. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at West Chester, Chester County, February 29, 1864, still understating his age, as a private with Co. E, 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry (113th Pa), promoted to sergeant, date unknown, and honorably discharged with his company July 20, 1865.
