U.S. Congressman. He attended Denison University, graduated from Miami University Ohio, in 1853 and was principal of the local academy at Osceola, Missouri, in 1853. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1855, practiced in Newark, Ohio and was president of the board of education of Newark. He was a member of the Newark City Council, prosecuting attorney of Licking County, (1857-61) and Mayor of Newark, (1860-64) and a judge of the court of common pleas in 1866. In 1879, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1883. An unsuccessful candidate for election, he was appointed a judge on the Supreme Court of Ohio, by Governor Hoadly. After retiring from the bench, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 56.
