Harry S. Truman:thank you sir for fulfilling the office of both vp and president from 1945-1953, thanks for guiding future president JFK to be a great president also and thank you laters for the great books that you written, you took out a personal loan from a Missouri bank shortly after leaving office, and then set about establishing another precedent for future former chief executives: a book deal for your memoirs of your time in office.Ulysses S. Grant had overcome similar financial issues with his own memoirs, but the book had been published posthumously, and he had declined to write about life in the White House in any detail. For the memoirs, you received only a flat payment of $670,000, and had to pay two-thirds of that in tax; you calculated he got $37,000 after you paid your assistants. The former president was quoted in 1957 as saying to then-House Majority Leader John McCormack, "Had it not been for the fact that I was able to sell some property that my brother, sister, and I inherited from our mother, I would practically be on relief, but with the sale of that property I am not financially embarrassed." The following year, Congress passed the Former Presidents Act, offering a $25,000 yearly pension to each former president, and it is likely that your financial status played a role in the law's enactment. The one other living former president at the time, Herbert Hoover, also took the pension, even though he did not need the money; reportedly, he did so to avoid embarrassing Truman. Your predecessor, Franklin D. Roosevelt, had organized his own presidential library, but legislation to enable future presidents to do something similar had not been enacted. You worked to garner private donations to build a presidential library, which you donated to the federal government to maintain and operate—a practice adopted by his successors.  In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Medicare bill at the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum and gave the first two Medicare cards to you and your wife Bess to honor the former president's fight for government health care while in office. In 1984, you were posthumously awarded the United States Congressional Gold Medal. In 1991, you were inducted into the Hall of Famous Missourians, and a bronze bust depicting you is on permanent display in the rotunda of the Missouri State Capitol. In 2006, Thomas Daniel, grandson of the Trumans, accepted a star on the Missouri Walk of Fame to honor his late grandfather. In 2007, John Truman, a nephew, accepted a star for Bess Truman. Other sites associated with your name include: Harry S. Truman National Historic Site includes the Wallace House at 219 N. Delaware in Independence and the family farmhouse at Grandview, Missouri (Truman sold most of the farm for Kansas City suburban development including the Truman Corners Shopping Center).Harry S. Truman Birthplace State Historic Site is the house where Truman was born and spent 11 months in Lamar, Missouri, Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum – The Presidential library in Independence and Harry S. Truman Little White House – Truman's winter getaway at Key West, Florida. Remembering you today, happy 130th birthday!

The Fulton Daily Sun-Gazette-1964:** Former President Harry S. Truman was in bubbling spirits here yesterday and showed the zest of a much younger man as he turned spadeful after spadeful of earth to oblige photographers at the groundbreaking ceremonies for Westminster's Churchill Memorial. Former President Truman, who will soon be 80 years old, finally quit turning earth, when Dr. Robert L.D. Davidson, college president, told him "to save some" for the others on the program.** Former President Truman, who was not listed as one of the speakers for the indoor ceremony, held in the gymnasium in connection with Founders Day activities took the podium to comment on Sir Winston Churchill's "Iron Curtain Speech", delivered here in 1946.

The Fulton Sun:*** The spring of 1964 was a memorable one for Westminster College. Former President Harry S. Truman was on campus twice, for both the Founders Day ceremony and for the graduation ceremonies.** At the same time, former President Truman was honored as the first occupant of the American History Chair, which has been endowed by a group of associates in recognition of President Truman's 80th birthday.** The college had hoped he would return to campus occasionally to give lectures, but this was not to be. Due to failing health, this was the last time major visit the former President would make to Westminster.

Dear sir, you were the last president who didn't go to college. You did better than many college-educated presidents. Thank you for proving one can be successful without a degree, Mr. President. I'd love to have seen your haberdashery shop. Ever yours,
