She moved west in 1900 where she rode horseback up and down the Snake River teaching school to children of sheep ranchers and miners of Idaho. She married James Thomas McDuffie, a lawyer in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Press-Courier, Oxnard, Calif, 24 Apr 1970 - she died 23 Apr 1970:
She had come to Oxnard five years ago from Montana. She was a retired school teacher, and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Oxnard.

Survivors include three sons: Dr. James Thomas McDuffie, II of Oxnard; Bryan Mansfield McDuffie at Lewiston, Idaho; and Sharon Belgrave McDuffie of Helena, MT; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park.

Her parents were James DeLong Hawkins and Ann Hall of Traverse City, MI.
