Folk Figure. Sheriff for Neshoba County Mississippi, His men led three civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner into the hands of the Ku Klux Klan who murdered them. The State of Mississippi never brought murder charges. Rainey was acquitted of Federal Civil Rights charges at his 1967 trial. This case was the basis for the movie, "Mississippi Burning.
