On 24 Dec 1861 David, a farmer, mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of New Salem, Franklin County, Massachusetts.
He died on 13 Sep 1862 at Georgetown, Washington, DC, of typhoid fever contracted on the march from Harrison's Landing to Newport News, VA, according to W. J. Coulter, his commanding officer. He was 44 years and 26 days old.
On 13 Nov 1862 Jane M. Bliss, his widow, received a pension based on David's service.
