Vestal Elwood Abbott, Jr. passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2012. He was born February 6, 1933 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Vestal & Edna Abbott, Sr. Vestal served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Yorktown as a machinist mate. He lived in Jacksonville since 1972 and was the maintenance manager for Castleton Beverage (Bacardi Bottling) for 27 years before he retired. Vestal was a loving husband, father, stepfather, and grandfather. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Gail; sons, Vestal Abbott III (Jodie), David Abbott (Kelly), Johnathan Abbott (Donna); daughters, Ruth Early (John) and Lena Skelton (Eddie); sister, Verlen Lown (John); sister in law, Lisle Townson; grandchildren, Vestal IV, Jennifer, Danielle, Courtney, Robert, Heather, Jamie, Matthew, Adam, Candi, Kristina and Katherine; special friends, Jan Davis, Linda Kurtts; devoted caregivers, Nikki Jones Mitchell and her husband Lee; also Bobby Stearns whom he loved dearly like a son. The family wishes to thank the friends and neighbors for their help during Vestals illness; The Stearns, Thrift, Ponder, Wagner, Donaldson and Dreher families, as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 31, at 12PM in the chapel of Cedar Bay Funeral Home, 405 New Berlin Road, Jacksonville, with Janet Lauramore officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Rd Jax, FL 32218. The family will receive friends on Monday at the funeral home beginning at 11AM.
