Rudolph E. (Bud) Mullins, an electrical engineer who helped build both the Bay and Golden Gate bridges, died at his home in Corte Madera on Sunday at the age of 84.
Mr. Mullins, who was born in San Francisco and moved with his family to Marin County after the 1906 earthquake, also worked on such Bay Area landmarks as the San Francisco Opera House.
He worked on the electric systems during construction of the Bay Bridge in the early 1930s and then went to work on the Golden Gate Bridge.
After completion of the bridge in 1937, Mr. Mullins was hired by the Golden Gate Bridge District and became superintendent of maintenance. He worked for the bridge district for 37 years until he retired in 1971.
Mr. Mullins supervised more than 90 people, from gardeners to ironworkers. One of his duties was supervising a special crew called out to rescue potential suicides who crawled out on the bridge girders.
"That bridge was his life," his daughter, Audrey Mullins said yesterday. "He knew it inside and out."
Mr. Mullins was married for more than 60 years to the late Gay Mullins. He is survived by three daughters, Gloria Mullins Steen of Sacramento, Marilyn Mullins of Greenbrae and Audrey Mullins of El Sobrante; a sister, Alice von Siebach, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Patrick's Church, King and Magnolia avenues, Larkspur. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, San Rafael .
