Once in a while, someone walks into your life that takes your breath away. Jeff Winans, was the one who took mine away from the first time I saw him in a Tampa Bay Buccaneer game program. We met a few weeks later at a local bar and I was introduced by my roommate. He looked like a "Greek God" with his black curly hair, black beard, big smile and eyes you could get lost in. He made my "pitter patter" and it was love at first sight for both of us. He was my Prince Charming and I was Cinderella. My Cinderella life ended a few years later, when Jeff became disabled from Pro Football at 30 years old. I went to work while fighting the NFL for his disability pension.. We won arbitration in July, 1984. Then Nov. 13th, 1984, after an horrific life threatening gunshot accident, came the blessing of finding out I was pregnant with our only son, Travis. The NFL took his pension back saying he was no longer disabled from football but from the gunshot accident. The company I worked for said unless we cut Jeff's leg off, they would deem all further bills medically unnecessary. With medicals piling up abd being the sole support of our family, came bankruptcy. Later surviving an earthquake, a recluse spider bite, two amputaions, six back and nexk surgeries, torn patella; too much to go into made our love grow even stronger. We fought the NFL off and on for Seventeen before he won his disability pension back in Dec. 1997. A few years later, progressive behavior problems, which we realized later were due to multiple NFL Head injuries, tore our family apart. But separation, an unexpected divorce and living three thousand miles apart couldn't destroy the love we had for each other.. He still made my pitter patter. We took things slow over the next few years, becoming best friends, rehab in Utah and and rekindling dreams we had left behind. A planned move back to Florida, the love our son and his newfound family; nothing could go wrong. Then suddenly, Jesus decided he needed him more and took him home, but we had come full circle. There was and joy and sooo much love. Make the most out of each day. Don't live with regrets. RIP my love, AML, AML, Brandi and Travis.. -
