Helen Walker, a resident of Borger from 1945 to 2008, died November 19 in San Antonio, Texas. She was surrounded in that journey by her loving family, and strengthened and comforted by the compassionate and dedicated care of her son, Johnny Walker, who has been the full time caregiver to Helen and his father John for five years.

Mrs. Walker was born in Granite, Oklahoma, on September 11, 1928, to Fred and Mabel Hassell. At 17, she moved to Borger to help her sister care for her husband, and it was in Borger that she met and married John Walker on February 16, 1946.

Mrs. Walker was well known in Borger as a friendly and successful sales person, first for Trout's Gift Shop, then in the camera department of Heard and Jones Pharmacy, and finally for Cartwright's, an exclusive dress shop, for more than a dozen years. Mrs. Walker managed Cartwright's cosmetics department, modeled for the store and was a fashion consultant to customers.

Helen is cherished as a devoted mother and wife, who ensured that the family had a secure home, and cared for John through numerous injuries from his job over many years.

Mrs. Walker is survived by her husband of 66 years, John Walker, their son Johnny M. Walker (Borger class of 1965), his wife Martha and children Mollie Helen and John Blake Walker; their son Richard D. (Ricky) Walker (Borger class of 1971), his wife Jeanean and children Carl and Alan, and their great grandchildren Ashton, Cannon and Zoie; her brother Jimmy Hassell; and her sisters Betty Moss, Fredalyne Morgan, and Carolyn Sue Hassell.
