Mrs. Irene A. (Black) Arkels, 96, of Leonore, passed away Saturday afternoon, December 8, 2012 at Heritage Manor in Peru.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Leonore with Rev. Charles McCarthy, pastor officiating. Burial will follow at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Leonore. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mueller Funeral Home in Lostant.
Mrs. Arkels was born on January 2, 1916 in Farmridge, IL to Clem and Effie (Mitchell) Black. She married Carlysle Arkels on July 18, 1942 at Sts. Peter and Paul Rectory in Leonore. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Leonore. She was a loving mother and grandmother and enjoyed being outside in her garden or reading.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Larry) Grubar of Oglesby and Patricia Johnson of Chillicothe; two sons, James (Linda) Arkels of Oglesby and Thomas (Joan) Arkels of Peru; a daughter in-law Alice Arkels of Peru; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Catherine Poundstone and Vera Rowe of Grand Ridge, Maxine Bennett of Streator; one brother, Robert Black of Grand Ridge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlysle Arkels in 1995; her oldest son Joe Arkels in 2004; three sisters and three brothers.
Pallbearers will be Daniel, Joshua, Jed Arkels, Tom and Christopher Calkins, and Jesse Johnson.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Leonore for memorial masses, Tonica Ambulance and Fire Department, or to the Leonore Volunteer Fire Department.
