Larry Driskell killed in Viet Nam fighting

The war in Viet Nam was brought home to Hamburg and Riverton over the weekend with announcement of the death in combat of Larry Ray Driskell. The young infantryman is the first battle casualty from area.

His wife, the former Alexa Anne Snyder of Hamburg, received word of his death in action Friday morning. He was killed on l Thursday, Aug. 11, which was his 20th birthday. Mrs. Driskell is expecting their first child.

He had graduated from the Army's special guerilla warfare training course at Camp Polk. La., May 14.

His wife went into shock upon hearing of the tragedy Friday morning, was taken to Community Hospital, and was released Sunday. She suffered a relapse Monday night and was returned to Community Hospital for rest.

Larry came home on leave in mid-May, then shipped out to Viet Nam, arriving there June 8. He was in Southeast Asia for two months and three days before his death.

Born in Riverton, he attended grade school there, and graduated from Hamburg High School in the class of 1964.

Funeral arrangements are tentative, awaiting the body by air from Viet Nam. Rash Funeral Home will be charge of the service, with military rites to be performed by the Hamburg American Legion post. Services will probably be held late this week or early next week, with burial at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Alexa, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Driskell of Riverton, and a sister. Mrs. Daryl Davis of Forestville, Calif.
