His father, Major Hugh Thomas Nelson, Officer-in-Charge of the 318th Field Hospital was serving in WWI in France during the birth-death of this child. On Christmas Day, 1918, Major Nelson gave his fair well speech to his unit since the War was over and Edith was in extremely poor health. He headed for the French coast in order to "catch" a ride back to the America.
