He was born August 4, 1933, at Rush, Kentucky, and was the son of the late Oscar and Rosa Jones Barber of Gallagher.
He was beloved husband, father and grandfather. He served in the U.S. Army for 30 years and received the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He retired with the rank of command sergeant major. He was active in the Silver Spurs 3/17 Air Cav reunions and started a newsletter for the surviving members, which began meeting yearly with his efforts in locating long lost comrades and coordinating reunions. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite Temple and the International Order of Odd Fellows and was an honorary Kentucky Colonel.
Surviving: wife, Peggy Chappell Barber of East Bank; daughter: Reta M. Barber Hughes, personnel coordinator for WVDHHR Bureau for Child Support Enforcement, and her partner, John D. Nelson, manager of Budget Tapes and Records, who reside in East Bank; and granddaughter: Alyssa "Allie" Hughes, who was the light of his life. He loving called her "Babe Doll."
Married to his best friend for 51 years, he never missed sending roses on their wedding anniversary. Serving in Korea and two tours in Vietnam, the roses were always delivered, one for each year they shared. His beloved Jack Russell Terrier brought him many years of joy.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, February 17, at Pryor Funeral Home with the Rev. David Mitchell officiating. Private family entombment will follow in the Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Glasgow.
