|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
The Wallace township cemetery occupies the bulk of the grounds, as first accessed from E. Wallace Co. Road O. Behind that, in the northwest corner, enclosed by a stone wall, is the old Fort Wallace Cemetery. The fort, an early outpost along the Smoky Hill trail in western Kansas, provided protection from 1865-1882. After the fort was abandoned by the Army, the graves of 80 officers and soldiers were moved to Fort Leavenworth Cemetery, being completed by the end of May, 1886. The graves of the army scouts who were not officially a part of the military, together with the civilian graves remain at the old post cemetery.
