Cemetery notes and/or description:
Sometime in the 1860's or early 1870s, Reverend Irving Jones and his family moved in to the Sabinal Canyon from Atascosa, Texas. He was an ordained Elder in the Methodist church South. Reverend Jones bought a place about three miles above Utopia, between Anglin Creek and the Sabinal River; where the Sam Harper family had lived before moving further up the West Prong of the river. Family members relate that Reverend Jones and his wife sat many times in the late evenings on the front gallery of their home and looked across the pastures toward some stately live oaks. They spoke of their desire to be buried under the trees. Mrs. Jones passed away in 1886, and her husband did not forget her wishes. She was buried beneath the oaks. Reverend Jones did not wish to be selfish and so decided to share this peaceful plot with others who wished to bury their dead there. He had already, in 1879, deeded land to the Utopia Methodist Church for a building site. After his wife's burial , He deeded two acres of land to the church as a burial place for their loved ones, and friends. Church Trustees at the time were; J. A. Anglin, I. H. King, R. A. Harper, W. B. Patterson (Frio Community) A. J. Barnett, J. C. Mitchell, J. D. Harper, and O. H. Gettee. Reverend Irving Jones died in 1903 and is buried under the oaks by his wife. Here you will find the grave of Ben Highsmith, whose father served as a scout in the war of 1812, and who was sent out of the Alamo by Travis with a message for Fannin just before its fall.
