It is actually located in BIG OAK FLAT, California. It has served the citizens of the Big Oak Flat & Groveland (formally know as "Garrotte" during the Gold Rush era) since it was dedicated in October 1860 by Archbishop Joseph J. Alemany. On the same trip to the southern mines, churches at La Grange and Chinese Camp were also dedicated. The first pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmet was Fr. Louis Lootens. During the early years the priest and parishioners came to church on horseback or by horse and buggy. The church has survived several fires over the years. The first recognized interment took place in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in December 1860. Manuel Prara De Costa, a young man of 27 from the Isle of Pico off the Portuguese coast died 2 Dec 1860.
