While the exact date of the formation churchyard cemetery is unknown, the corresponding church was mentioned in the Domesday Book in the 11th century. Originally, the church had a ring of 5 bells, but a 6th bell was cast and dedicated on All Saints' Day, 2014 and was added to mark the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. The parish clock, which was regilded in 2014, was originally installed after the end of WWI as part of the parish war memorial. Documented burials at this church date back to 1561, encompassing thousands of names, however only a few hundred tombstones have survived to modern day due to churchyard overcrowding and grave site reuse over the centuries. As a result, some recently discarded tombstones can be found propped up against perimeter walls and church buildings in the churchyard.
