|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Note: This cemetery is incorrectly identified in many published records as the "Helm Cemetery", because another Thomerson Cem is located in the same vicinity. Several Helm(s) family members are buried therein, and most were related to the Thomerson family by marriage. A cemetery census of Barren Co. KY, taken and published about 1980, labeled the Thomerson Family Cemetery "Helm" because a Helm descentant was trustee at the time. Not a deliberate act to rename the cemetery, but certain to cause misunderstanding and confusion of future generations. The Thomerson Family Cemetery is located in Barren County, Kentucky, approximately 3 1/2 miles south of the small community of Cooktown, on the site of the original farm owned by James William (Will)Thomerson (Thomasson) and his descendants. At the time of this writing (March 26, 1971) the portion containing the cemetery is owned by Mr. Bedford Armstrong, Austin, Kentucky. The gravesites are located in a fenced area, approx. 1/4 acre in size, and the co-ordinates are 36.81462° N. Latitude, and 85.94393' W Longitude.
The cemetery contains forty-four (44) known graves*, dating from December, 1871. The most recent burial took place in January, 1967. Virtually all of the graves contain members of J. W. Thomerson's immediate family, their spouses, and minor children.
James William Thomerson, born in Bedford Co., Virginia, moved to Kentucky with his father, Christopher Thomasson, and several other brothers and sisters between 1830 and 1840. He purchased the farmland upon which the cemetery is located about 1850. His home still stands, although devoid of the fine orchards and wood setting which characterized the home site in earlier days.
This cemetery census was made in the summer of 1970, by John R. Pitcock, Louisville, Kentucky, with the assistance of Frankie Thomerson Pitcock, who identified the unmarked graves.
