The Cemetery of the German Reformed Presbyterian Church is at the corner of Watterson Trail and Shelby Street, just about a block from the main intersection of Watterson Trail and Taylorsville Road in Jeffersontown. This cemetery is very old, with graves dating from 1799. The grounds are fairly well-maintained; at least the grass is cut, although there was some trash strewn about. These old gravestones, though, are in very bad shape. Many have fallen down or are tilting precariously. Many of the gravestones are so old that the inscriptions can no longer be read; I couldn't tell whether I was looking at the front or the back of the stones, they were that faded. Some of the oldest stones are covered with yellow moss. Most of the gravestones are flat rectangles. Some are round, which I had not seen in the other graveyards. There was only one obelisk. This is fitting, considering that, after the Protestant Reformation, funeral services at this Calvinist congregation would have been more staid. There is a definite change in materials and artwork over time, the oldest headstones being plain stone, with the newer ones of granite with designs of flowers, crosses, and hearts. The newer stones, with their laser-cut lettering and decorations, seem like they will be easier to read with time, unlike those with the letters chiseled into them. There were not many children's graves. Surprisingly, this cemetery appears to still be in use, as there are double headstones awaiting another occupant (Ellen White; May 2014).
