|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Westenhaver Family grave yard/cemetery.
Located in Section 27, Penn Township, Jefferson County, Iowa.
As described in the Jefferson County genealogy book on the locations of cemeteries:
"Very difficult to access. Densely wooded terrain. Located high on a bluff above South Walnut Creek, in Southeast Corner of the land shown on p. 31, 1909 Atlas of Jefferson County, as being owned by Jacob Courtney.
Note: Owned by Ralph and Marie Kann and sold to Don and Virginia Greiner in October 1968.
The grave yard, enclosed by a rusted No. 9 woven wire fence, containing two tombstones and indication of a third grave (unmarked), was located and copied on 8 Sept. 1970 by Mr. Emerson Masden, Mr. Robert Schillerstrom, and Mr. Orville L Prill.
There are only two headstones that have been found - for Abigail Simpson and Arlistus Westenhaver. While it is possible that Abigail's husband Andrew is the third burial, no evidence has been found to support it. Therefore, these are the only two burials that should be listed for this cemetery/grave yard.
In the 1970's the Greiner children cleaned the area and built a board fence around the two stones of Westenhaver and Simpson.
The area was revisited on September 11, 2001 and found to be covered with poison ivy growth and other such ground covering.
This is a very simple family grave and this listing is to honor Abigail Simpson and Arlistus Westenhaver.
