Cemetery notes and/or description: The book, "History of Freestone County, Texas, Vol. 1," #135, says that "Rev. James Hill Bounds was a traveling Methodist preacher in Mississippi, who moved to Texas (1867) where he built a church in Tehuacana Valley near his home."
First burial in Tehuacana Valley Cemetery, was Lorinda D. Bounds, granddaughter of Rev. James Hill Bounds, and the assumption is that this cemetery was located near the site of the church established by Rev. Bounds.
From Mexia go North on Hwy 14, turn West (left) on LCR 250 and go about .6 miles. Cemetery is on the left. The cemetery gate is visible from the road but not the cemetery itself. It is approximately 200 steps off road. Cemetery is fenced and being maintained, with the last burial being in 1984. It is unknown who owns or maintains this cemetery. Cemetery was originally read in 2003 by Bruce Jordan, email@example.com. It was more recently photographed in 2011.
Name beside entrance gate of Tehuacana Valley Cemetery shows the name Valley Cemetery, written in large letters. An old photograph of this cemetery entrance shows that this sign, Valley Cemetery, originally stood ABOVE the gate itself. This may cause confusion for some, but numerous more recent burial records (Death Certificates), plus older historical records, indicate the CORRECT name of this cemetery is TEHUACANA VALLEY CEMETERY.
PLEASE READ SPECIAL NOTE: This cemetery should NOT be confused with similarly named Tehuacana Cemetery in Mexia, Limestone Co., TX. These are separate cemeteries located miles apart. Likewise, it should be noted that there was/is no cemetery named "Valley Cemetery"--it has always been Tehuacana Valley Cemetery.
