Departement des Hauts-de-Seine
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
In 1884, the municipality of Neuilly-sur- Seine acquired land to establish a new municipal cemetery, as the old one had grown too small. As the cemetery grew, it expanded so that it actually was located more in the communes of Nanterre and Puteaux than Neuilly-sur- Seine. In 1887 the main entrance was on the Rue de Valmy in Puteaux, but with the development of the La Défense business complex in northern Paris after World War II, the entrance was moved to the Rue de Vimy, Nanterre. The complex includes a World War I French military cemetery which contains thirty Commonwealth war dead who died in hospital in the Paris area. The cemetery also includes an American Legion mausoleum in Division 11 which contains the remains of members of the American Legion, most of whom died abroad (American Legion Paris Post No. 1 is located in Neuilly).
