Cemetery notes and/or description:
Canterbury City Cemetery was opened in 1871. The site is dominated by an ornate double chapel of rest, with an imposing central spire. There is a handsome Cross of Sacrifice, similar to one in Deal Cemetery, in honour of the Service men and women who were casualties of the First World War, many of whose Commonwealth War Graves Commission markers can be seen nearby. Canterbury is a garrison town, with strong links with The East Kent Regiment ('The Buffs'), so there are over 200 war graves, including some in a small formal war cemetery. Canterbury was targetted during the Second World War during the 'Baedecker Raids', and many of the Civilian War Casualties of those three terrible nights can be found in the Cemetery. Several Muslim burial sites and a green burial area, are located within the grounds, which have several fine specimen trees, including a silver lime tree planted by General Gordon of Khartoum.
