The Cimetière du Grand Jas (Grand Jas Cemetery) is located at 205 avenue de Grasse in Cannes on the French Riviera. The 9 hectare (22.24 acre) terraced cemetery began operations in 1866 and is known for the quality of its landscaping, horticulture, and statuary.
Its Cimetière Anglais (a.k.a. "the English square") is the final resting place for a number of English expatriates. It is dominated by the statue of Henry Peter Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux, who played a major role in building the city. Some of the other notables buried in the Grand Jas Cemetery include Eugène Brieux, dramatist; Martine Carol (actress), Peter Carl Fabergé (Russian jewelery designer), Georges Guétary, singer and actor; Olga Khoklova, Russian ballerina and Picasso's first wife; Klaus Mann and Prosper Mérimée, writers; biochemist Jacques Monod, Nobel Prize winner; Lily Pons, opera singer; and Marcel Thil, boxing champion. |
