|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Southend-on-Sea (Sutton Road) Cemetery is north of the town's northern by-pass (the A1159) and east of the railway line heading for Rochford.
It is one of three cemeteries operated by the council in the Southend borough-the others are North Road Cemetery and Leigh Cemetery. The three Cemeteries total over 60 acres, Sutton Road being by far the largest.Sutton Road Cemetery has burials dating back to 1900, 34,600 graves and, as at November 2009, there have been over 93,000 burials. Southend Borough Council also provides a complete burial and maintenance service for the Jewish Cemetery in Stock Road, though a part of Sutton Road has a Jewish section too. It does of course also have an area for burials of those of the Catholic faith and a small area for Muslims. Even though the crematorium is across the road, there is a large area [5 acres] in the cemetery for cremated remains. There are 279 identified wargraves here [including Australian Casualties of the Great War, a number of Canadians and one unidentified seaman of the Merchant Navy. In addition there are 4 Foreign National war burials here. There are 2 small Screen Wall memorial panels naming those of the 1914-1918 war whose graves are not marked by headstones.(text by Geoffrey Gillon-July 2013)
