Cemetery notes and/or description:
Cemetery Lane is off Colchester Road, Ipswich. Two gardens of rest (now closed for further interments of ashes) and the Temple of Remembrance can also be found here.
During the 1939-45 war the last rite of cremation was accorded to 33 men and women of Commonwealth Forces at this crematorium, which is situated within Ipswich New Cemetery. 30 of these are commemorated by name on what the Commonwealth War Graves Commission describe as "Screen Wall" memorial panels in the crematorium's Temple of Remembrance. The ashes of the other 3 were buried in the "Urn Section" (Section TR) of the Garden of Remembrance and they are commemorated there by the familiar white Portland Stone Commission Headstones. The map shown, used with the kind permission of Ordnance Survey and Ipswich Cemeteries Department, shows the relationship between the various cemeteries off Colchester Road and Tuddenham Road.[text by Geoffrey Gillon]
