|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This is the original foreign cemetery used by the cities of Hankow (west bank of Yangtze north of Hanshui River), Wuchang (east bank), and Hanyang (south of Hanshui River). The three cities were later merged and renamed Wuhan.
During the turmoil of the 1890's, it was referred to as the Martyr's Cemetery by the missionary community, because of the number of murdered missionaries brought there to be buried.
By 1910, the Old Cemetery had reached capacity and the New Cemetery was opened.
In the 1950's, the local Land Bureau "relocated" the Old Cemetery to Hanyang. No physical evidence has, as yet, been identified.
See "Cemetery Map", for an historical view.
On the MAP tab, the cemetery location is indicated correctly on the map view below but IS NOT CORRECT on the satellite view, because of misalignment between the two modes. Look for basketball courts for matching location.
