|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
The Sandersville Old City Cemetery is located at the corner of Virginia Avenue, West Church Street (Ga Hwy 24), and West Haynes St. and is just 2 blocks west of downtown Sandersville in Washington County. The cemetery is still maintained by the city of Sandersville.
The Sandersville Old City Cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Places and contains the graves of notables, Governor Thomas William Hardwick and Rev. James Danelly Anthony. The cemetery has over 1000 grave entries, with the possibility of additional unmarked graves that are no longer visible. The cemetery is believed to have started in about 1831, which is the date of the first grave, Reuben B. Barney in Section B, Lot 100. The next oldest, original marked grave is 1855, and so the cemetery grew very slowly until the late 1800s. Burials continue to this day.
