|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This is the original (or first section of land ever used for) Riverside Cemetery. It is officially called "Old Riverside Cemetery" and it is listed this way in the offical cemetery books for Spencer, Owen County, Indiana. There isn't any other name for it. The entrance is located at the corners of Short and Jefferson Streets. However, it is confusing for genealogists because there is a sign there that says "Laurimore". No one knows why the sign is there or how it got there. No one wants to take the sign away because they don't want to stir-up trouble. Anyone who visits this cemetery, please keep in mind that it is "Old Riverside Cemetery" and "Laurimore" doesn't exist. It also gets confusing because people don't realize that even though they are part of the same cemetery, there are actual boundaries that separate the two. There aren't actual markers but "Old Riverside" does have a few graves that are surrounded by a low red brick wall. There is also an infant's grave (Baby Herschell) that is marked with a wrougt iron fence. This grave is at the very end of the line that separates the two cemeteries.
It's also frustrating because I can't make the administrators undersand this concept so they insist on linking Old Riverside with Laurimore and now there are two Old Riversides listed when in reality there is only 1. :o(
