Cemetery notes and/or description:
The Church of St Mary the Virgin at Chislet is a well-known local landmark, situated on a low rise above the surrounding marshland. The church is very large relative to the size of Chislet village, and has an unusual truncated spire on the central tower, with a flat, walled top, which suggests at first glance a French chateau. Originally mediaeval, the church was rebuilt in the 13th century; the tower is Norman. Inside the nave has been completely cleared, and is used as a social centre for the surrounding area. The restoration of 1866 swept away a rare west end priest's room, but spared the mediaeval graffiti on the nave pillars. The services of the church are now held in the former chancel, separated by a curtain at the base of the tower. Most of the monuments are in this eastern end.
The churchyard has views over the marsh to the east, and includes several groups of graves of extended local families. There is a modern extension on the opposite side of the lane, which has two war graves.
