Cemetery notes and/or description: Thanington Without is a parish and suburb of Canterbury—supposedly the only one of its type; it means ‘outside' and it is outside the walls of Canterbury. It extends to the south-west of Wincheap and the A28 and the charming parish church of St Nicholas can be found almost hidden behind a thick covering of trees. The church dates from the early 11th Century and has many interesting features including its four-sided spire. An odd plan of nave with north tower, chancel and south nave chapel, it is built of local flints with stone dressing. Yew trees, the largest of which has an enormous round seat encompassing it, dominate the exterior. The pulpit and most of the nineteenth century stonework is by William Butterfield. The register dates from 1558; the tower was rebuilt 1856. The church also has an impressive collection of stained glass windows. St Nicholas Church holds regular religious services and festivals throughout the year. There is no car parking at the church. The origins of the name are uncertain-the following are possibilities: - a link with Thanet (Ekwall). Taena's place, a farmstead. OE taening, tun or ton. Taningtune 833; Tenitune 1000; Taninton 1249; Tanyntone 1327; Taneton 1380; Thannnyngton 1570; Tannington 1612; Taen - the offspring or descendant, may have been members of the tribe or people who settled at Teynham near Faversham.
